The Four Rivers Tier-One Essentials Checklist
This checklist is your 72-hour rapid response audit—the essential gear every person should have ready, regardless of experience level, for the first 72 hours of any contingency or emergency.
1. Hydration & Sustenance
-
Primary - Water (Carry): 3 Liters of potable water. Standard: Stainless steel single-wall (allows for direct-fire boiling).
- Secondary - Filtration (Procure): A field-ready 0.1-micron hollow fiber filter + 1L collapsible reservoir for "dirty" water collection.
-
Contingency - Chemically Treat: Chlorine Dioxide tablets (effective against Cryptosporidium/Giardia)
- Caloric Intake: 3,000 calories of shelf-stable, high-density nutrition (avoid high-sodium options that increase thirst).
Capability Check: Can you move 5 miles while carrying your total water weight without compromising your pace?
2. Thermal Regulation & Shelter
- Static Layer: High-loft packable insulation (synthetic preferred for moisture retention).
- Active Layer: Technical wind-rain shell with reinforced high-wear areas.
- Emergency Shelter: 1.1 oz Sil-Nylon Tarp (minimum 8 x 10) or a heat-reflective bivy. Avoid "emergency blankets", they are single-use failures.
- Fire Starter: One "constant flame" source (butane) and two ignition sources (e.g., ferrocerium rod and waterproof matches), plus tinder.
Capability Check: Can you establish a thermal micro-climate in under 4 minutes in total darkness?
3. Navigation & Communication
- Analog: Physical topo maps (laminated) of your 50-mile radius (1:24,000 scale) and a baseplate compass with declination adjustment or a standard liquid-filled compass.
- Power: A ruggedized 10,000 mAh power bank + "Faraday" bag for device protection against EMI. Also, have the necessary device cables.
-
Signal: A 100dB+ whistle and a glass signal mirror (polycarbonate mirrors lack the necessary "aiming" precision).
Capability Check: Do you have a predetermined Rally Point and a "No-Comms" plan with your primary group?
4. First Aid & Trauma
- The Bleed Kit: 2x genuine windlass tourniquets (e.g., CAT Gen 7 or SOFTT-W). Note: One must be staged for one-handed deployment. Hemostatic gauze (QuikClot/Celox) and 6" pressure bandages.
- Personal Meds: A 7-day supply of essential prescriptions in a waterproof container.
Capability Check: Do you have the muscle memory to apply a tourniquet to your non-dominant arm in under 30 seconds? Can you recall the M.A.R.C.H. protocol?
5. Tools & Repair
- The Blade: Full-flang fixed blade (S35VN or 1095 Carbon steel) capable of batoning wood.
-
Maintenance: Multi-tool with needle-nose pliers and wire cutters.
- Adhesion: 10ft of Gorilla Tape wrapped around a lighter or card
